Days before this concert, near the clock tower, a boy dressed in black handed me a satanic-looking flyer that read “A Night of Calamity”. We exchanged a few words and he told me with a smile that he hoped to see me at the Greendoor Store on Sunday. First of all, you don't have to be a metalhead to enjoy metal (please click HERE). The Sunday of the concert it snowed like never before, and when night fell I decided to put on my boots and go to the old horse hospital to listen to that metal and alt-rock session. We were twenty people and the alternative punk metal millennial category.
By the time I got there, they were already playing Anti La Vie. If that name is not an antisocial hymn come GG Allin and deny it. It was very special to see a young, black, unapologetic singer with R’N’R attitude leading the band. Why does this keep getting attention? It's been a long time since Bad Brains made a difference, but things in the hardcore-punk scene and certainly in the metal scene are still extremely white. Nova Twins a band led by two POC women have a lot to say about racism and metal. By the way, here I leave you the original version of Antisocial that is not from Anthrax but from a French group called Trust!
Openshight followed, really theatrical and had a ton of musical and visual film references. The essence of my beloved Mike Patton also fluttered.
Finally, it was Cylus time, and there came to mind the mornings at the afterhours where I worked on Fridays and Saturdays from 6 to 11 in the morning from 1995 to 1997. There we played Pantera, Sepultura, Metallica, Flitter, WhiteZombie, Ministry, Suicidal Tendencies , Primus and many other metal and rock variants. The strongest thing about that afterhours was that it was next door to a church, which brought us many unwanted visits from the police and the occasional raid. Cylus' music contains the DNA of those bands. To be able to feel that power on a brilliantly freezing night was exceptional. Their music was a steamroller and I'm sure Phil Anselmo would be proud of them. I was. My recommendation is that, when offered the opportunity, go to a metal concert and enjoy what a black mass is and the power of the watts in a way that alters your energy in a way that other types of music do not. can do it. Then you can go home and hug your stuffed animals and even tell them how powerful Cylus were.
Love it! Not a metal fan but you may have converted me 🎸
