Skating Polly vinieron desde Oklahoma City y tocaron dos días antes del 8 de Marzo en The Hope and Ruin. Son un trío mixto donde la voz cantante, a veces rabiosa y siempre feminista la llevan ellas, y van repartiendo gran parte de lo que fue mi dieta musical durante la decade de los 90. Es decir, una combinación de guitarras contundentes con melodías pop y mucho edging. Fue inevitable para mí hacer el link con That Dog, el grupo de Anna Waronker, Rachel Haden ( de las Haden Triplets) y Tony Maxwell. Aquí debo ensalzar ese gran comeback de That Dog en 2019, y especialmente el homenaje que Haden and Waronker hicieron al padre de la primera en el emotivísimo y bellísimo Old LP ( que en su momento viví como un premonitorio homenaje de despedida a mi padre). Pero bueno, esto va de celebraciones y el concierto de Skating Polly fue una gran celebración para un Lunes frío de invierno.
Como es costumbre en Brighton, audiencia intergeneracional y mixta, mención especial para los dos jovenes entusiastas y entregados con sindrome de Down en la primera fila ( you guys were the best of the night). Hubo también un poco de episodio queer que involucra a alguien en el tour y Grindr, que pensé importante comentar hace días pero ya no. Tiene que ver con expectaciones y el gran armario que todavía sigue siendo el Rock and Roll.
Spaff fueron muy contundentes, no tan melódicos, pero increíblemente serviciales, a pesar de la distancia musical, con Skating Polly.
Skating Polly came from Oklahoma City and played at The Hope and Ruin two days before International Women´s Day. They are a mixed trio where the leading voice, sometimes rabid and always feminist, is led by them ( Peyton Bighorse and Kelli Mayo), and they distribute a large part of what was my musical diet in the 90s. That is a combination of forceful guitars with pop melodies and much edging. Inevitable for me to link with That Dog, the group of Anna Waronker, Rachel Haden (of the Haden Triplets) and Tony Maxwell. Here I must praise the great comeback that That Dog did in 2019, especially the tribute that Haden and Waronker paid to the father of the former, in the emotional and beautiful Old LP (which I experienced at the time as a premonitory farewell tribute to my father). But hey, this is about celebrations and the Skating Polly concert was a great celebration for a cold winter Monday.
As usual in Brighton, mixed and intergenerational audience, special mention to the two enthusiastic and dedicated youngsters with Down syndrome in the front row ( you guys were the best of that night). There was also a bit of a queer episode involving someone on tour and Grindr, which I thought was important to comment on days ago but no longer. It has to do with expectations and the big closet that Rock and Roll still is.
Spaff were very forceful, not quite as melodic, but incredibly accommodating, despite the musical distance, with Skating Polly.
